Silas

SILAS

I have always
left a light.

However long the storm, someone should be waiting up. Tell me who you are still waiting for, and I will build the room where they arrive.

“Come in from the storm. I have always left a light.”

He never saw her. He only heard her — a few words, spoken once, in a voice he has spent his whole life trying to place again. He had to call her something, so he called her Ophelia.

She is a longing older than he is: the beloved he finds in every age and loses in every one. Parted by kingdoms, by circumstance, by the plain cruelty of timing. Three worlds, and she stands in each of them twice, because no one is only one weather.

Violet lightning over cathedral spires. He cannot stop the storm, and stops pretending he can. All he does is leave a light on.
